I’ll be honest with you: when Heybike first teased the Villain ($1399), my reaction was somewhere between amazed, intrigued and skeptical. Heybike makes fantastic commuter e-bikes and impressive folders: the kind of bike your unc (me) buys to ride to the farmer’s market. So when they showed up at CES with a Sur-Ron-ish-style electric dirt bike claiming 45 mph and 190 Nm of torque, at less than half the price, I had serious questions.

California is set to shake up how out-of-class electric two-wheelers are regulated, as a newly proposed bill, SB 586, aims to clarify the status of electric bikes without pedals, officially dubbing them “eMotos” and classifying them as off-highway vehicles.

Just announced this morning by Luna Cycle in the US, the Talaria MX5 Sting Pro is the highest-performance electric trail bike yet to still offer an affordable entry price tag for enthusiasts. If you thought those youths cruising your neighborhood on their Sur Rons were rough enough, wait until they get their mitts on the new Talaria MX5. It’s the latest in the quickly growing market of easily obtainable off-road electric motorbikes, and this time the specs are finally pushing their way into true dirt bike territory.
